Concerns about school, relationships, anxiety, depression, sexuality, career direction, choosing a major, family issues, traumatic events, crises, or other situations may arise. Sometimes students can handle these challenges on their own or by discussing them with family or friends, but many times, professional help is beneficial.

Educational Resources and Counseling psychologists, social workers, counselors and supervised graduate students in professional training provide a variety of short-term counseling services for Tulane undergraduate, graduate and professional students. Individual counseling appointments are limited to 10 sessions per year (counting from first day of classes until May 31). There is no limit to the number of group sessions a student may have.

Services are free of charge except for summer counseling sessions and certain testing services (see below for more details).

All information shared in the counseling process, including the fact that a student has sought counseling, is held strictly CONFlDENTlAL to the full extent allowed by law. See Important Information about Counseling for additional information about confidentiality.

Personal and Group Counseling

Problems such as relationship difficulties, family concerns, stress, traumatic events, anxiety, depression, loneliness, and difficulties adjusting to college, may make it difficult for a person to function comfortably and effectively. Mental health professionals provide an atmosphere in which personal issues of any type may be examined and discussed freely and confidentially in order to increase the chances of adequate resolution.

The Group will offer:

  • A number of ongoing Support Groups for faculty, staff and students, such as:
    • Coping with Loss
    • Anger Management
    • Post Traumatic Stress Disorder
    • Academic Support Group
    • Family Support Group
  • Individual counseling for students as well as faculty and staff and their families.
  • Seminars/Forums/Activities - creating a safe place where persons can genuinely share and express how they think and feel.

Educational Counseling

Many students eventually experience some type of difficulty in their academic work. Through counseling, students may discover the causes of such difficulties. Students may receive an assessment of academic strengths and weaknesses, and recommendations for improvement which may include development activities and exercises, diagnostic testing, and self study. Common educational concerns include time management, concentration, note taking, text reading, and test-taking skills. Click on Study Strategies for additional information about recommended college-level study strategies.

Career Testing

The center also offers a variety of career tests that measure career-relevant interests and personality variables, which can help students develop or confirm career and/or college major options. The nominal charge for career testing is $50.00.

ADHD Screening

Crisis Intervention

A crisis might be any situation a person feels unable to cope with effectively. Educational Resources and Counseling counselors will make every effort to respond quickly to students in crisis with an appointment or a telephone call.

Consultation

Our staff is available to consult with anyone concerned about the mental health or well-being of a Tulane student. (However, if the student happens to be a client, staff are not free to share information about the student without the student's permission).

Groups & Workshops

A group or workshop may provide the appropriate forum for working through a concern. It offers a variety of groups, depending on student interest, which usually meets on a weekly basis for a semester or more. Some of our most popular groups include: 1) a therapy group for survivors of childhood sexual abuse; 2) a support group for graduate students; 3) a support group for students with learning disabilities and/or attention deficit disorder and 4) Support group for "Women of Color". Other groups may be offered if there is sufficient student interest.

Testing Services

ERC counselors may recommend testing to help evaluate the problems a student is experiencing. The results of tests taken at ERC are discussed with the student as part of the counseling process.

In partnership with the Student Health Center, the Center for Educational Resources and Counseling also offers an on-campus evaluation for possible attention deficit disorders.
